Nokia has announced a project release of MeeGo software. MeeGo is the open-source next-gen operating system for computing devices jointly developed by Nokia and Intel. New MeeGo 1.1 update will let users dual-boot Nokia N900 devices on a memory card that have latest 1.3 update running on it.

MeeGo 1.1 update is a project release not meant to be used on a daily basis over a device. This is an unfinished product and meant only for developers. In this update, developers can find cellular and sensor technologies built into the core of the mobile operating system. Basic mobile phone functions like voice calling, texting SMS, web browsing, music and video playback, photo viewing and other connection management have been tightly integrated.

MeeGo 1.1, the latest version of the operating system that resulted from the merger of Nokia's Maemo and Intel's Moblin platforms, was released a few days ago, and we already had the chance to take a look at the installation process of this solution on the Maemo-based Nokia N900. Along with MeeGo 1.1, a MeeGo 1.1 Handset UX came, and now we should detail it a little more.

And since MeeGo 1.1 is only one step in MeeGo's evolution, a quick look into the future is also required, at MeeGo 1.2, the platform version set to land in about six months from now.

MeeGo 1.1 brought a series of other novelties too many of which are aimed both at handsets and at other devices that would run under the mobile operating system, but what interests us at the moment is the MeeGo Handset user experience development, which was brought to light now.

“The MeeGo 1.1 Handset UX release is a technology snapshot including key handset technologies, such as cellular, connectivity, sensors, and mobile browsing,” a recent post on MeeGo reads.

Moreover, the post notes that the release also includes “a basic development UX for voice calling, SMS messaging, web browsing, music and video playback, photo viewing, and connection management.” A detailed list with these components can be found below.

The MeeGo Handset image includes the MeeGo 1.1 Core OS. Moreover, it should be noted that it comes with support for the Nokia N900 ARM based platform, as well as for the Aava Mobile Intel Moorestown platform DV2.

Some of the software included in the new release was not tested, and those who will install it will do so at their own risk, as the device could behave unexpectedly. A list of known issues in MeeGo 1.1 is available here.   

“After installation your warranty no longer covers the use of this device. Continued use could cause harm to you personally, your device and/or lead to unexpected costs,” the said blog post continues. Those who do not agree with these should not install the software.

Following the release of MeeGo 1.1, the development team has started the work on the next flavor of the platform, MeeGo 1.2, which should be released in April 2011.

According to them, the next version of MeeGo should come with a Handset UX release, which would include complete set of applications, as well as support for other device usage models.

The development tree of the new MeeGo version was opened, and the new components have already started to be included. A series of features that should come with MeeGo 1.2 were filed in MeeGo Featurezilla, and they can be seen here.

MeeGo Handset UX framework is based on MeeGo Touch Framework and Qt technologies and provides capabilities for touch screen GUI application development, home, application Launcher, and application Switcher, to open and switch between applications.

MeeGo Handset Dialer
MeeGo Dialer application provides basic phone functions for making and receiving calls, with a simple call history and basic integration with Contacts for contact names and numbers.

MeeGo Handset SMS
MeeGo Short Message Service (SMS) application focuses on basic aspects of creating, sending, receiving, viewing, and deleting SMS messages.

MeeGo Handset Browser
MeeGo Handset Browser provides a basic browser application, with a mobile optimized browser engine powered by Mozilla technology. It supports bookmarks, cookies, plug-ins, add-ons, and the latest web protocols, as provided by the underlying Mozilla technology, such as: HTML, XHTML, XML, XSLT, XPath, DOM, CSS, RDF, MathML, and JavaScript. The browser also supports Flash plug-ins, once installed on the system.

MeeGo Handset Photos
MeeGo Handset Photos is a basic photo viewer application. You can open, delete, and view your photos. It supports image rotation to view in both portrait and landscape orientations. Other features include support for viewing photos in the form of thumbnails, photo lists, and photos in slide show mode. For management, we added features to support photo albums, search capabilities, and autogenerated album principles.

MeeGo Handset Video Player
MeeGo Handset Video Player is a basic video playback application. You will be able to play videos full screen and have on top, layered user controls and a timeline indicator as videos play. Additional features enable showing metadata, accompanied with some videos containing information, such as the names of Actor/Director and episode names.

MeeGo Handset Audio Player
MeeGo Handset Audio Player is a basic music playback application with play control features for previous, play/pause, next, shuffle, and repeat. It also shows the name of the current song and the play queue.

Home screen and in-vehicle management features have been added for automobile entertainment systems. Nokia N900 tablet users willing to try out this update can download it from here while others who wish to check out MeeGo 1.1 update on netbooks in general can get the build from here.

Tata DoCoMO is the first private mobile service provider to announce the date for launching the much anticipated third-generation (3G) mobile services.

The company aims to get a head-start and plans to introduce high-end services such as ultra-fast internet, videoconferencing and other 3G services by Diwali (November 5th 2010), its executive president, mobility business division, Deepak Gulati told ET.

“Japan’s NTTDoCoMo has provided technical inputs to make our 3G network world-class. Progressively, NTT will bring various 3G products and services that it offers in Japan — such as i-modeTM, location based services and mobile payment — and give our customers a flavor of tomorrow,” Mr Gulati added.

The nine circles where Tatas will launch 3G services include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (West), Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Other leading operators such as Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar are also slated to introduce 3G services by the year-end. But, these companies are yet to announce the dates.

Mr Gulati declined to comment on 3G tariffs, but said that the pricing would be consumer friendly. The Tatas, who were a late entrant into the country’s mobile space, have maintained that 3G will reset the communications space as it would, for the first time, see all telcos launching operations at about the same time. “We want to be the first of the block and show the superiority of DoCoMo’s technology,” he added.

The country’s top two mobile firms — Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications (RCOM) — each had won 3G airwaves in 13 of the 22 telecom zones on offer while other major operators Aircel , Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular and Tata Tele won a total of 13, 9, 11 and 9 circles, respectively. The Tatas earlier said that Chinese major Huawei would implement the initiation of 3G services for the company in five circles, while Nokia Siemens Networks has bagged the contract for the remaining four circles. The combined deal size for the Tatas is just under $300 million.

The device has a 3.2-inch touch display and now features Wi-Fi, for fast internet access without the need or expense of a data plan. It also features a compass and assisted GPS for use with the latest version of the free Ovi Maps hands-free navigation service, now featuring public transport support and location sharing through social networks. Like many recent Nokias, you can put your most important contacts directly onto the homescreen so you can call, message or chat them up in just two taps. The C5 has a 5-megapixel camera with 4X digital zoom, but no flash.

It measures 105.8 mm x 51.0 mm x 13.8 mm (L x W x H) and weighs 93g – that makes it a similar size to the (imminently) forthcoming C6-01, and quite a bit smaller than the Nokia N8 or C7. It comes with up to 40MB of user memory and support for MicroSD cards up to 16GB. The talktime is quoted at 11.5 hours for GSM use and 4.5 hours using 3G. Standby time is estimated at 24-25 days. The operating system is Symbian^1 (aka. S60 5th edition touch-edition).

The Nokia C5-03 allows for easy email set-up – either an existing webmail or POP3 provider through Nokia messaging. For business users, there’s also the option of Mail for Exchange. Mozilla blog has now introduced their first Firefox 4 beta for mobile. It is now available for download and testing on Android and Maema powered devices. This beta loads up on several Firefox desktop features such as the Awesome Bar, Firefox Sync, and Add-ons.

The company focuses on augmenting its responsiveness and performance. Just like we had earlier reported two major architecture changes have been made namely, Electrolysis and Layers. However, the Alpha include Electrolysis while Layers was slated to arrive with the beta. As the beta enters it brings along the Layers pieces which enhance the overall performance as well as graphics in areas like zooming, scrolling, and animations.

Furthermore, it includes Firefox Sync, which proffers a smooth Web browsing experience between the handset and computer. By syncing the phone, users will not have to retype passwords or long URLs as bookmarks, tabs, passwords, the browsing history and form-fill data can be easily obtained. The Awesome Screen offers quick access to recent bookmarks, tabs and history by simply tapping on the Awesome Bar.

The beta even renders pinch-to-zoom functionality support for multitouch-capable handsets. With the beta, developers can make use of the latest web technologies such as HTML5, CSS and JavaScript to create fast, robust and attractive mobile apps and add-ons. The Firefox 4 Beta has been designed for the Android and Maema platforms.

Nokia QT SDK version 4.7: - Nokia has released software developers kit Qt to version 4.7, and adds some new features for developers. The biggest new feature QT SDK version 4.7 is that it allows the development of interfaces with animation; becomes it possible to touch-based Qt-based applications.
This is possible through QML (Qt Meta-Object-Language), which can use language such as JavaScript. Qt 4.7 also lets developers create applications for both Symbian and MeeGo, provide better runtime performance, and allows developers to add Web-based content for their applications via the tool QtWebKit (which now supports hardware acceleration). In addition there is also a Qt QML Declarative which is part of the solution Quick Qt (Qt User Interface Creation Kit).
