Hewlett-Packard buys Palm for $1.2 bn

Posted by webmaster Thursday, April 29, 2010 0 comments

Image representing Hewlett-Packard as depicted...

Hewlett-Packard Co said it has struck a $1.2 billion deal for Palm Inc, offering a 23 per cent premium to expand into the smartphone

market.
The news comes after much speculation on Wall Street about who would buy Palm, which once dominated the market but which has been overshadowed by Apple Inc's iPhone, Research in Motion's BlackBerry and phones that use Google Inc's Android software.
In a sign of Palm's struggles, the company on Wednesday slashed expectations for the current quarter, saying slow sales of its products have resulted in low order volumes from phone carriers. "If you saw the guidance Palm just put out, it was clear they had to sell," said Phil Cusick, analyst at Macquarie Research.
"Given how quickly Palm's business was falling off and how fast their cash was going out the door, they're lucky to get what they got.
Shares of Palm, which is 30 per cent owned by private equity firm Elevation Partners, jumped 28 per cent to $5.92, above HP's offer in a sign that some investors could be betting on a higher bid.
Under the deal approved by the two companies' boards of directors, HP will pay $5.70 cash per share of Palm, a 23 per cent premium to its closing price on Wednesday of $4.63.
Some investment banking sources had thought that Lenovo was the leading candidate to buy Palm after the US company was rebuffed by other potential Asian buyers including HTC Corp and Huawei.
Palm now expects fiscal fourth quarter revenue in the range of $90 million to $100 million, compared with its mid-March forecast that revenue would be less than $150 million. It estimated it would end its fiscal fourth quarter with a cash balance of between $350 million and $400 million.
HP already has a smartphone, the iPaq, which runs on Microsoft's Windows mobile platform. But the device has gained little traction in a smartphone market crowded with competitors. Lawrence Harris, analyst at C L King associates, said it would have been risky for HP to ignore the rapidly growing smartphone market.
"I would say HP looked around and said, we need to be in this space. Google is here, Apple is here. And there aren't many stand-alone smartphone companies," Harris said. "They would be one of the few companies that I think could successfully turn Palm around."
Palm's current chairman and CEO, Jon Rubinstein, is expected to remain with the company, HP said in a statement, adding that it expects the acquisition to close during its third fiscal quarter ending July 31. Shares of HP fell to $52.35 in extended trading from their New York Stock Exchange close of $52.28.

Vodafone to launch Rs 700 phone

The race to provide ultra low-cost mobile handsets to consumers in India has moved to the next level, with telecom service providers competing with mobile handset makers to offer models below Rs 1,000.
Leading the way is Vodafone, which is set to launch its Rs 700 ($16) mobile phone in the country. The handset is expected to push the company's rural agenda.
Even as mobile phone makers like Nokia, Micromax , Fly and Ray are retailing handsets at alluring prices, this is the first time that a telecom service provider has decided to go below the Rs 1,000-mark. Earlier, Nokia retailed a phone at Rs 1,300, and Vodafone had a mobile priced at Rs 1,200.
Besides India, the British operator is also set to unveil a pair of ultra-cheap handsets starting at below $16 in the developing markets of Egypt, Turkey and Africa.
Marten Pieters, MD and CEO, Vodafone Essar, said, “The average user in rural India does not spend as much as mobile consumers in Delhi or in Mumbai. Though the majority still make a revenue stream for mobile operators, the idea is to make mobile phones affordable and achievable for everyone,” he said.
The Rs 700-handset will be retailed across the country, and not just in rural areas, reducing the entry barrier for consumers who have not yet bought a cell phone. On Monday, Nokia launched a Rs 6,000-handset loaded with a full qwerty keypad, email service and access to social networking sites.

Nokia N8 specs and pics

The biggest feature on the Nokia N8 is its 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash. It features a substantially larger sensor than any ever used in any other Nokia device – even bigger than many found in dedicated cameras. Recently, we caught up with Nokia’s resident camera guru, Damian Dinning, to get the full lowdown on what went into fine-tuning the N8’s camera and video capture skills – you’ll be able to read the full fact-packed story right here on Conversations this week, so stay tuned.Nokia-N8-03

The Nokia N8 also introduces the ability to record high definition videos and edit them with a smart built-in editing suite on the device. Playback quality is just as important, and the 3.5-inch HD capacitive touchscreen is the ideal window for assessing your flicks and footage. There’s also a HDMI connector allowing you to hook the smartphone to your HD TV and share your media with friends and family in superb quality. We wanted to find out more about the benefits of HDMI in the Nokia N8 so we spoke to Paul Wheeler, a software program manager at Nokia, to get the full story – again, be sure to keep an eye out for our full story this later this week.Nokia-N8-10

The Nokia N8 also doubles as a portable entertainment centre. Watch HD quality video with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound and hook into a dedicated Web TV application for access to news and entertainment on the move.

It’s not just its 12-megapixel camera and HD video skills with HDMI support that set the Nokia N8 apart from the crowd. Packing more memory than most, the Nokia N8 has 16GB of built-in storage and is expandable up to 48GB with a micro SD card.

Image representing Facebook as depicted in Cru...

Facebook wants to bank on the Symbian S60 community, too, hence they’ve released a Facebook application in the Ovi Store. The app is designed as a runtime widget and it works on S60 touch-enabled (S60 5th edition) device, only. This means that owners of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia N97 are the only one who will be able to take their Facebook with them, wherever they happen to be.
As we’re talking about a runtime widget, you’ll need an Internet connection all the time. Hence it’s best to use some affordable or unlimited data plan, or to do your “Facebook think” while in a hotspot.

From the app, you can do pretty much everything basic Facebook (without Facebook apps) allows you to do — including update your status, see what your friends are up to, upload photos, check messages, comment on everything, RSVP to event invites, and confirm or deny friend requests…

In a nutshell – since it’s free, it’s a must have app, even for those who don’t consider themselves savvy/regular Facebook users.

Hacker runs Google Android on Apple iPhone

Image representing iPhone as depicted in Crunc...

A hacker who goes by the name of David Wang has just done something to prove that platforms of competing smartfone companies can indeed be compromised.

David posted a video on the 'Linux on the iPhone' blog demonstrating how Google Android can be booted onto a first-generation iPhone. He suggested that Android could be ported to all versions of Apple’s smartphones, a move that seemed greeted positively by many of the blog’s supporters.

In his blog, David also said, "At some point this summer, Apple will release the iPhone OS 4, which will include features such as multitasking and an 'iAd' mobile applicationadvertising platform. Lack of multitasking has been one of the traditional complaints lodged against the iPhone, and used as a selling point for smartphones running the multitasking-capable Google Android."

Porsche has turned its attention to the mobile phone market with its launch of the P’9522 handset. P’9522 was never going to be cheap.....Carved from a solid block of aluminum, the phone comes with a 2.8-inch OLED touchscreen display covered with a single sheet of scratchproof mineral glass. A fingerprint reader, five-megapixel camera, MP3 player, WiFi capabilities and GPS complete the package, with room for a micro-SD card to expand capacity.

P´9522 Black Edition: Design philosophy in its purest form

Porsche Design's second award winning cell phone is now available in a new variant: the P´9522 Black Edition.

The straight lines and purist form of the phone are particularly emphasized in the Black Edition by the combination of matt, black anodized aluminum and black mineral glass. The casing is milled from a block of solid aluminum. The P´9522 Black Edition embodies the timeless and authentic design philosophy of the brand in its purest form.

Alongside its elegant design, the P´9522 Black Edition cell phone is also packed with innovative functions, modern communications technology and excellent sound and image reproduction. A unique feature of the Porsche Design cell phone is a sensor that reads fingerprints, so that the user can authentically identify himself or herself and secure access to personal information is guaranteed.

Furthermore, shortcuts can be configured, for example to allocate each touch to a telephone number or device function.

Porsche Design, a subsidiary of the German automaker, has recently unveiled the Porsche P’9522 Black Edition mobile phone in Singapore. Porsche first entered the mobile phone market three years ago with the launch of the P’9521 mobile phone. The first designer cell phone won rave reviews, with the readers of German Telecommunications magazine“Connect” voting it as “Product of the Year 2007″ in the luxury phone category.

The new P’9522 Black Edition will be available only to existing Porsche owners. Around 1600 of these cell phones are being made, and Porsche owners can buy it from the car dealership, Stuttgart Auto. The sleek, super-luxury phone comes along an equally grand price tag of 2,280 Singapore dollars ($1,636). Sagem Wireless is the manufacturer of the phone. The phone will eventually head to Hong Kong next, before making its way to China, Dubai, Germany and Russia.

21 April 2010, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil– ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, today announced the Brazilian launch of the new handset N290, a low-cost cell phone with digital TV in Brazil.
Available exclusively through Vivo, the mobile phone will be available in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo from this week, priced at BRL 399 for the pre-paid version and BRL 199 for the post-paid plan. It will be available in other Brazilian cities in coming weeks where Digital TV signals are just available.
The ZTE N290 incorporates an MF645 3G modem for Digital TV reception, and supports Vivo’s strategy to bring mobile Digital TV to its customers in time for the World Cup in South Africa in June.
With a 3.2 inch widescreen, the handset works with the Brazilian TV digital system ISBD-T which allows the access to all digital open channels at no cost. The new handset also features a 2.0 MP camera and supports a Maxim 8G TF card.
According to Vivo’s Executive VP of Marketing and Innovation, Hugo Janeba, the launch aligns with the mobile operator’s strategy of helping people experience a new way of rooting for their team in the 2010 World Cup.
"We want Brazilians to fully experience the World Cup and be able to watch the games anywhere and at anytime," he said, adding: "And when soccer fans have their own pocket TV, the experience certainly becomes much more complete."
This means people won’t miss the World Cup opening game, which will take place at 11am (Brasília time) on a Friday (June 11), when most Brazilians will be at work, and the Brazilian National Football Team’s first match will be on Tuesday, June 15, at 3:30pm – in the middle of the work day.
Importantly, Digital TV services are free of charge. This means that once a handset is purchased, there is no need for a monthly subscription to access Brazil’s broadcast TV.
According to Eliandro Avila, ZTE's President in Brazil, the manufacturer’s goal is to offer an innovative and low-cost device in a market that, until very recently, only had expensive deals to offer with Digital TV.
"Our job is to make the Brazilian digital system more popular and accessible to everyone," he said.

Microsoft launches phones

Posted by webmaster Wednesday, April 14, 2010 0 comments

Image representing Microsoft as depicted in Cr...

Microsoft Corp launched two new phones aimed at young people, marking a fresh assault on the low end of the growing smartphone market, where BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd and Apple Inc now dominate.
The software company's first foray into designing its own phones comes six months before it rolls out its new Windows software for phones made by handset makers HTC Corp, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and others, which should be a more direct challenge to Apple's iPhone and Google Inc's Android phones.
"Kin is an interesting attempt to target the 15 to 25 market," said Ross Rubin, consumer electronics and wireless industry analyst at market research firm NPD Group.
Success will depend heavily on the pricing of data plans, said Rubin, which is not expected for a few more weeks. Microsoft did not say how much the phones would sell for.
"But even if the device does not turn out to be successful, Microsoft is introducing some concepts that might be useful," said Rubin. The Kin One and Kin Two, as they are being branded, are made by Japan's Sharp Corp and will be sold by Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.
The new phones -- available in the United States in May and Europe in the autumn -- focus on combining feeds from Facebook, MySpace and Twitter onto the homescreen, and allow users to set up networks of friends to share photos, weblinks and so on.
Both of the new Kin phones have a touchscreen, slide-out keyboard and camera. Kin One is smaller, designed to be used with only one hand, while Kin Two has a larger screen and keyboard, more memory and can record high-definition video.

They incorporate Microsoft's Zune digital music player and FM radio. Almost everything on the phone is stored by Microsoft in remote servers and a

ccessible via the Internet from any Web browser via an online application called Kin Studio.
Kin automatically backs up text messages, call history, photos, videos and contacts, in an attempt to soothe fears of data loss. Last October, users of Microsoft's Sidekick phones temporarily lost data due to a server failure.
Microsoft broke with tradition by working with only one manufacturer on the phone, but stressed that the Kin is consistent with its broader Windows Phone 7 strategy, which will put a new generation of smartphones on the market later this year.
"This isn't a Microsoft product," said Robbie Bach, head of Microsoft's entertainment and devices unit, at the Kin launch event in San Francisco. "Sharp is not just the manufacturer, they sell the phones to Vodafone, not Microsoft. This is a very traditional model, it's just that we were more involved in the design and the hardware with Sharp."
Microsoft has traditionally licensed its Windows phone software to a wide range of handset makers, allowing them to control the user experience.
Launching Windows Phone 7 in February, Microsoft admitted that approach had led to some loss of consistency across models, which suffered in comparison with Apple's minutely designed iPhone.
Microsoft plans to work more closely with handset makers, but Bach repeated that it still had no plans to manufacture its own phones.
