Every Phone, the new app brings Facebook's most popular features like News Feed, Inbox, and Photos to over 2500 different mobile handsets. The app will enable users to upload photos and find friends from their phone's contacts.

Users from anywhere in the world can download the app from m.facebook.com and scroll down to the download link. Every Phone can also be directly installed in mobile browsers from d.facebook.com/install. The app is also available on GetJar, Appia and Mobile Weaver.

Currently, Every Phone app is available for Java-enabled phones, however, the company said that it is working on making the app compatible with more handsets in the future.

Facebook has also tied up with carriers worldwide to offer users free data access to the app for 90 days. In India, the company has tied up with Airtel, Aircel, Idea and Reliance.

Rovio has just announced the availability of its latest game ‘Angry Birds Rio’ for iOS and Android platforms.

Developed in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox, the intriguing Angry Birds Rio integrates the animated stars of the studio’s upcoming flick ‘RIO’ which will debut on April 15. The fascinatingly addictive game features two episodes and 60 interesting levels, while new episodic updates will be provided throughout the year.

Rio is a comedy-adventure about taking a walk on the wild side.  Blu is a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, living a comfortable life with his owner and best friend Linda in the small town of Moose Lake, Minnesota.  Blu and Linda think he’s the last of his kind, but when they learn about another Macaw who lives in Rio de Janeiro, they head to the faraway and exotic land to find Jewel, Blu’s female counterpart.

Not long after they arrive, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by a group of bungling animal smugglers.  With the help of street smart Jewel, and a group of wise-cracking and smooth-talking city birds, Blu escapes.  Now, with his new friends by his side, Blu will have to find the courage to learn to fly, thwart the kidnappers who are hot on their trail, and return to Linda, the best friend a bird ever had.

In Angry Birds Rio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio, where they eventually escape their captors and set out to to save their friends, Blu and Jewel – two rare macaws and the stars of the upcoming Fox motion picture, Rio.  Angry Birds Rio will pair the physics-based gameplay of the original game with unique twists based on the highly-anticipated film.

Angry Birds Rio will launch with 45 dedicated levels and will regularly add new levels via app updates. The game will be available for download on smart phones and tablets worldwide.

Yamgo has announced the launch of Zing, a popular 24 hour entertainment, music and lifestyle channel on its mobile TV network.

Zing is an Asian music and Bollywood themed TV channel from Zee Entertainment aired across sixty different countries including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Japan. It is the latest in a series of channels to be released on the mobile content delivery network. Watching 3-D films on your cell phone would now be possible thanks to researchers who have combined the new mobile radio standard LTE-Advanced with a video coding technique.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut, HHI in Berlin, Germany, have come up with a special compression technique for films in especially good high-resolution HD quality.

It computes the films down to low data rates while maintaining quality: H.264/AVC. What the H.246/AVC video format is to high-definition films, the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) is to 3-D films.

Thomas Schierl explained that "MVC is used to pack together the two images needed for the stereoscopic 3-D effect to measurably reduce the film's bit rate," and this technique can be used to reduce the size of 3-D films as much as 40 percent.

That means that you can quickly receive excellent quality 3-D films in connection with the new 3G-LTE mobile radio standard. Key is the radio resource management integrated into the LTE system that allows flexible data transmission while including various quality of service classes.

Thomas Wirth, another scientist at the HHI, added, "The 2-D and 3-D bit streams divided up by MVC can be prioritized for each user at the air interface to support different services, thus opening up a completely new field for business models."

The new technology would be shown at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Students can now watch lectures ‘live’ on their smart phones. Experts at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) have developed an automated application, which will allow students to watch lectures on their cellphones.

What distinguishes the application from other ones is the display. The application will allow students to focus on any part of the video with a clear resolution.

Called lec-to-mobile, the application has the potential to reform distance education programmes in the country. The application, developed by a professor and students of the electrical engineering department of the institute, will soon be patented. The project will be officially launched on a public domain in the days to come.

“Lec-to-mobile is completely automated. It allows students to download any lecture. It could be a lecture going on or an earlier one. The students will be able to ‘attend’ the lecture as per the required resolution. The cursor will automatically move on the writing board and will also zoom in and out whenever required. They will be able to experience a live classroom on their cellphones,” professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, the inventor of the application, told DNA.

At present, the application can be used on Android phones. However, it would soon be made available on windows application on cellphones as well. The beta version would be available for free initially, said Chaudhuri. “Distance education itself is a big sector now. Accessing lectures on the phone can help the sector in several ways,” he said.

Lec-to-mobile will offer lectures only by those professors who are willing to upload them. The application would also provide lectures by companies who are providers of such sessions.

“It is the same format used by television channels. The shows are created and developed by a production house and then are taken by the channels. Lecture companies or institutes can exploit the application in many ways,” Chaudhuri said.

“The idea is to make use of the limited amount of space that we have on cellphones,” explained Rangan Banerjee, dean, research and development, IIT-B.

“The team from the electrical engineering department has worked on the aspect of video resolution of the lectures. They are planning to put up the demo version on the public domain soon. The professor also has some patents on his name already.”

Bitstream Inc. has announced a mobile browser that supports Indian languages and it’s the first in its kind. This browser is made for handset manufacturers and mobile operators and is built upon the BOLT cloud computing browsing platform. HP Labs have come up with a technology which will supposedly enable web access through low-end mobile phones, called the “SiteonMobile”. This technology is based on the use of SMS and voice services for the task of web access, without the use of the conventional method of webpage-based browsing.

The SiteonMobile technology has been based on the cloud-computing technology, and is mainly focused on the small and medium scale enterprises which may deliver the services and content of their website by means of SMS and voice. Task based web interactions or tasklets can be used for relevant content delivery to the users instead of the whole webpage. The tasklets have the capability of being accessed from any internet enabled device.

At present, the service is available for no cost, but once the project is fully updated, charges for the SMS and voice services may be levied on the users.

A latest method has been invented through which eyes testing can be done with the help of a mobile phone. For this, the user will have to simply download software, install in any mobile and get their eyes checked. This latest technology called NETRA (Near to Eye tool for refractive assessment) has a viewer that fits over the screen of the mobile and has software which runs of the cell phone. The device NETRA is designed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The invention of this device has been made possible with the help of MIT’s Media Lab Associate Indian born Professor called Ramesh Raskar, visting professor Manuel Oliveira, students Ankit Mohan and Vitor Pamplona and a post doctoral research associate.

In order to check the eyesight, the user will have to attach the plastic to the screen of the mobile phone and then look into the small lens. The arrow keys in the phone have to be then pressed till the set of parallel green and red lines overlap. This process is to be repeated 8 different times for each of the eye and within 2 minutes the software will provide the prescription data.
