Symbian shutting down websites

Posted by webmaster Monday, November 29, 2010 0 comments

Symbian Foundation that took the platform open source is shutting down its virtual doors. Come December 17, the foundation that hosts all the open-source code, big fixes and documentation for the OS is shutting down its websites. symbian

As reads a message on its website, "Recently, we announced that the Symbian Foundation will be transitioning to a licensing body. In practise this will mean a reduction in the day-to-day operations of the Foundation by the end of the year. As a result, we expect our websites will be shutting down on 17th December. We are working hard to make sure that most of the content accessible through web services (such as the source code, kits, wiki, bug database, reference documentation & Symbian Ideas) is available in some form, most likely on a DVD or USB hard drive upon request to the Symbian Foundation. Preparing this content will take some time, hence it will not be distributable before 31st January 2011."

The websites that will be affected include:
* www.symbian.org, www.symbian.org/cn, www.symbian.org/jp

The company is also ramping the capacity of its manufacturing unit in Pune, but it will not manufacture the smartphones in India yet.

"We are importing the smartphones from Korea. We will have to wait and see the sales before we take the decision of manufacturing smartphones here. We will invest about USD 4-5 million for the expansion," he said.

LG's Pune facility has a capacity to manufacture eight million handsets a year, which will be increased to 15 million by next year.

Handset maker LG said it will invest more than Rs 100 crore for marketing and promotion of its smartphone range 'Optimus' in the country next year.

The investment is a part of a Rs 350-crore marketing budget for 2011.

"We entered the smartphone segment later than many of our competitors. But over the next six months, we will launch 10 more devices in the Optimus series, priced between Rs 8,000- 30,000," LG Electronics India Managing Director Moon B Shin told reporters here.

LG has set aside Rs 350 crore as marketing investment for 2011, of which more than Rs 100 crore will be for the smartphone category, he added.

The company estimates the current smartphone category at about three million handsets annually.

"We have a mere two per cent share of the smartphone market in India, which sells about three million devices a month. The market is set to double next year and we are targetting a share of 12-15 per cent in 2011," Shin said.

Google Voice Available Now for the iPhone

Posted by webmaster Wednesday, November 17, 2010 0 comments

Google gave a rundown of things to expect in the new app and, from the initial response, it looks like the app is going to be a hit. You get cheap international calls, free text messages, voicemail transcription and access to your Google Voice Caller ID.bits-iphonegoogle-blog480

All of this was already available in the web app Google built, the native app brings push notifications for new text messages and voicemail. It will also enable users to call via Direct Access Numbers, meaning they'll be able to dial the number they want and call it through Voice directly.

Previously, users had to pick the number and then wait for a call from Google Voice which then connected them to the number they wanted to reach.

For Google Voice iPhone users, it's a dream come true, more so because it has been 16 months in the making.

While Google doesn't mention anything about the long wait or the dispute with Apple, those wanting to use the service on their iPhones remember it well.

Google submitted the app back in summer 2009. However, Apple gave no response and the app was not accepted into the App Store, nor was it rejected outright.

There was nothing Google could do about that, the company and the users were at the mercy of Apple. When pressed for an answer as to why the app wasn't approved, Apple said Google Voice replicated core functionality available on the iPhone and, as such, was against the App Store's policies.

Google had no way of forcing Apple to approve the app so it built a HTML5 Google Voice app instead. While the app went a long way towards bringing Voice functionality to the iPhone it was still fairly limited in its capabilities.

Earlier this fall, Apple eased back on some of the policies regarding the App Store and has now finally approved the Google Voice app after a 16 months 'review.'

Tata DOCOMO, the GSM arm of Tata Teleservices Ltd, today commercially launched its 3G services in Rajasthan telecom circle.Tata DOCOMO, the GSM arm of Tata Teleservices Ltd, today commercially launched its 3G services in Rajasthan telecom circle
Tata Teleservices, the first private operator to launch its 3G services in India, has simultaneously launched its 3G services in all the nine circles--Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh, UP (West), Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra--where it has the 3G license.

''We have cherry-picked the best telecom circles in the country from the perspective of cumulative market potential for our 3G services,'' he said.

''While 3G as the next-generation of mobility brings with it better voice clarity through HD Voice, fewer call-drops and high-speed Internet access, the impact it is likely to have on consumers' lives is much greater than any of these improvements alone,'' Mr Ajit Charutvedi, Hub-Head for Tata DOCOMO's Operations in Rajasthan and Gujarat, said.

''Tata DOCOMO's 3G offering starts off on a rich and heady note, with the introductory service portfolio itself including applications like Video-SMS, Video-Streaming, Mobile Television, Ultra-High-Speed Data Transfers, Route-Finder, Live Aarti, and much more,'' he said.

Nokia Symbian adds swype, wireless payment tool

Posted by webmaster Wednesday, November 10, 2010 0 comments

Nokia Oyj, the world's largest maker of mobile phones, will add swiping and wireless identification features in updates to its new line of Symbian smartphones to compete with Google Inc's fast-developing Android platform. nokia-n98-02

"The biggest threat and biggest opportunity is our ability to keep Symbian fresh and interesting," Jo Harlow, senior vice president for smartphones at the Espoo, Finland-based company, said in an interview. Near-field communication, which permits users to use their phones as credit cards, transit passes and hotel room keys, will come to "some existing devices" early next year, she said.

Nokia has been slow to incorporate all the desired features into the first release of Symbian 3 because it took time to shift to the Qt programmer toolset and adapt functions it planned for a separate product family called Symbian 4, Harlow said. Her division has increased the number of common features in its smartphones this year and reduced fragmentation.

"In the past if you bought a device, you got one or two software updates," she said. "We will now begin to deliver software updates more frequently and more of them. Visually, you'll see some significant upgrades coming, to keep the experience of the device fresh and new for the consumer."

New Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop unveiled last month plans to cut 1,800 jobs globally in areas including in smartphones as it moves to a common Symbian development path and shares some functions with the new high-end device platform called MeeGo that it's developing with Intel Corp.

Symbian Foundation
The process is being further streamlined as Nokia absorbs the activities that were formerly done externally at the multi-vendor Symbian Foundation.

Nokia announced yesterday that the London-based foundation, which had more than 150 vendors as members, will be converted to a licensing body. Its other functions will become part of developers' work and it won't have a separate paid staff.

Samsung Electronics Co and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Ltd, which were board members of the Symbian Foundation, shifted their new products to Android as that platform took off, boosted by its vendor-independent application store and regular software upgrades. That reduced their commitment to take responsibility for more of the approximately 100 "packages" or functions in Symbian.

"The original vision was going to be that the package owners would be spread among a number of companies so you would have had 20 per cent of them at Nokia, 20 per cent at Sony Ericsson, 20 per cent at Samsung -- that didn't happen," said Tim Holbrow, executive director of the Symbian Foundation, in an interview. "We had one or two outside Nokia but the main part was still inside Nokia."

Angry Birds
Nokia's Ovi Store, the only large Symbian-specific application store, currently has 2.7 million downloads a day, Harlow said. The faster, high-resolution touchscreens are attracting "premium games" developers such as Rovio Mobile Ltd, the maker of "Angry Birds," she said.

Nokia will upgrade its touchscreen text input on Symbian 3 to include split screen, a portrait mode keyboard, and the Swype system for typing connected letter groups, Harlow said.

More than 50 modifications based on early user feedback are planned to roll out to current users early next year. The C7 model now on sale already has the hardware for NFC, which allows customers to use their handsets for payments and identification at points of sale and access, she said. She wouldn't comment on whether the other Symbian 3 models had the NFC components.

"NFC is a portfolio play, not a single-device play," she said. "It works when everyone has it."

Lower prices
The new Symbian 3 devices, N8, C6 and C7 "are still in ramp-up stage in a number of different countries," Harlow said, adding that the company had record preorders for the N8. The E7, a business touchscreen with a slide-out keyboard, will ship by the end of the year, she said, declining to give an exact date.

Nokia plans to drive Symbian smartphone prices lower and compete at 120 euros ($167) "and below," Harlow said. She cited the ability of Symbian handsets to store and navigate maps offline and the ability to pay for apps by phone bill instead of credit card as ways that Nokia is appealing to consumers with less money to spend on smartphones.

Some other handset vendors are still working with Symbian. Japan's NTT Docomo Inc. this week announced 11 new smartphones running a version of Symbian called Symbian 2, according to an e-mailed statement from the Symbian Foundation.

Twitter for Android upgrades with new functions

Posted by webmaster Friday, November 5, 2010 0 comments

twitter-androidTwitter blog elucidates that the company has upgraded its Twitter for Android. Packed with some fresh enhancements, the company claims that it will proffer a more steady experience.

Some of the additions include the Tweet details page which has been introduced by changing out the layout of the timeline. This functionality is already present in the iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone versions. It could be accessed by simply clicking on any tweet making it effortless to access links, retweet, reply to, or favorite a Tweet.

The app has been improved to function faster. A new way of drawing a timeline of Tweets has been added to augment the scrolling speed. Another functionality that was earlier present in the iPhone app has now been added which lets users pull down the timeline to load new Tweets. By swiping across a tweet, handset owners can access several options like the ability to view a user’s profile, reply or share a tweet.

In addition to the above the upgraded app will proffer hi-resolution avatar photos and quote a Tweet. On clicking the retweet icon, users will notice a new option to quote a Tweet. The latest upgrade can now be downloaded from the Android Market. It is compatible with Android 2.1 and higher.

SkyFire sold out in 5 hours on iTunes

Posted by webmaster Thursday, November 4, 2010 0 comments

Skyfire 2.0 app for iPhone went on sale at the App Store. However, the company claims that in barely 5 hours they were sold out and will now accept purchases only after they manage to increase their capacity.skyfire-browser

So what does this app have in store for us? It offers us the ability to open up to eight windows and browse simultaneously. Interestingly, the offering is said to convert flash videos so that they can be effortlessly viewed on the handset. Looks like iPhone owners absolutely loved this software because of the numerous features it provides. In addition to the above it makes socializing simpler with quick sharing on Facebook and Twitter and the Facebook Quickview.

What’s more, the browser keeps the user’s browsing private without leaving behind any data trails. Proffering User Agent Switching, it loads pages for either mobile or desktop. The company is still unclear when it will be able to accept purchases for the application from the App Store

Refusing to give any indication of pricing, Sardana said it would be affordable and various offerings would be packaged according to the need of the user. He claimed that Tata Docomo’s 3G service will offer much superior speed because it is on HSPA+ network that supports high speed internet access with speed of up to 21.1 mbps under ideal test conditions. “Technically you can call it ‘3.5G+’ service.

Motorola Flipout full specs

Posted by webmaster Monday, November 1, 2010 0 comments

The Motorola FLIPOUT is an Android handset with a very unusual form factor, following on from the similarly named BACKFLIP and based on the same platform as the Motorola DEXT.ruth_saf_l_dyan_open_set2 005

The rounded-off square design hides a five row QWERTY keyboard that rotates out from underneath, giving a fairly narrow set of keys with the slightly unusual feature of a row of number keys. Although the form factor is unusual, it is actually pretty similar to the US-only Nokia 7705 Twist, however the FLIPOUT is a much more powerful device than the Nokia.

On the front of the Motorola FLIPOUT is a 2.8" touchscreen display in a traditional 320 x 240 pixel resolution. On the back is a fairly basic 3 megapixel fixed-focus camera which should be good enough for basic snapshots and occasional video clips, and Motorola have partnered with Kodak to integrate their technology for clearer pictures and easier sharing.images
