Google has released a few exciting updates to its Maps service (Version 4.2) for Android. The highlighting updates are biking directions, sharing your location and a new navigation icon on your home screen. This update is for Android 1.6 and up devices.
Biking Directions:
The bicycle icon in the new Google Maps, provides an optimized direction results specially for two-wheeled transport. Roads with bike lanes are highlighted in light green, while roads that lack dedicated bike lanes but are still bike-friendly are shown in dashed green. Bike-only trails are show in dark green. The new terrain layer indicates you about the upcoming huge hills so that you can decide whether to climb or not.
Location sharing:
You can now share your location or any other point on the map via e-mail, SMS, Google Buzz, Facebook, or Twitter. Just take a snapshot of the your current location using the “My Location” blue dot or “Latitude”.
Navigation Shortcut:
Google has added an optional homescreen Navigation shortcut which when tapping gives you one-click access to speaking/typing directions, navigating to contacts, and a list of recent destinations.
The Google Maps version 4.2 is available now through the Android Market. It is available in all the countries and languages where Maps is currently available.
